1903 Charter - it ran on gasoline and water! The Charter was the brain child of one James A. Charter of Chicago. While not certain how well his idea of a mix of gasoline and water really worked, at the time he stated that his engine had an "explosion that was softer and longer" than other engines.
No doubt if it was truly possible to run a car on a 50/50 mix of gasoline and plain tap water in today's era of $4.00 a gallon gasoline the explosion would be in the number of cars Mr. Charter could sell. That said, it is a real and truly amazing story! |
